[ARCHIVED] Urban Bow Hunting Safety Reminders

The City of Hendersonville, in partnership with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA), reminds residents that bow hunting season for deer starts on September 27. Hunting is allowed inside city limits provided hunters follow all TWRA state hunting guidelines.

“Urban bow hunting is a part of a carefully managed wildlife program aimed at controlling overpopulated deer herds, reducing vehicle collisions and supporting ecological balance,” said Jerald Barrett, chair of the Hendersonville Deer Monitoring and Control Committee. “It is a safe and effective way to manage the deer population in Hendersonville.”

Residents wanting to hunt on their property are advised to visit the TWRA website to obtain a hunting license and follow all recommended safety guidelines.  Archery hunting is the safest method in urban/suburban areas with a high density of houses.  The season begins Saturday and runs through January 4. Hunters should remember to:

  • Take an approved hunter safety course
  • Carry a valid Tennessee Hunting license
  • Hunt from an elevated position
  • Talk to neighbors before tracking a deer onto their property

The Deer Committee has compiled a directory for residents who are seeking help with managing the deer population on their property. The Urban Bow Hunter Directory is available on the city website and will connect homeowners with available hunters to help harvest deer during the season.

“By working together, hunters and residents help reduce the deer population in Hendersonville,” said Barrett. “Residents frequently share with the committee they want help hunting on their property. We are hopeful this directory will be a good resource.”

The city and TWRA would also like to ask residents to consider donating harvested deer to food bank programs if the meat will not be utilized by the hunter. Tennessee Wildlife Federation’s Hunters for the Hungry program is a great, easy way to provide hunger relief. The mission of The Hendersonville Deer Monitoring and Control Committee is to gather information and provide recommendations to the City and Residents on how to live in harmony with a healthy deer population.
