What Are Explorers?

Police Explorers are a part of the Boy Scouts of America and Learning for Life Exploring.

Group at Trick or TreatThe Explorer program is designed for youth that are interested in a career in law enforcement.

Explorers learn about basic police procedures, techniques and tactics, receive hands-on training and compete in competitions with other law enforcement posts.

What will Explorers Receive?Training in Parking Lot

HPD Explorers will receive training that will prepare them for not only police specific application,  but also to be effective adults in the community. Many explorers go on to become police officers and say that the skills learned as an explorer are invaluable. Explorers that do not choose a law enforcement career will come away with valuable life skills. Effective communication, problem solving, leadership and other skills will be learned through the explorer post.


How do you become a member? 

Explorers at Freedom FestThe application and recruitment process for the Hendersonville Police Department Explorer Post is an on-going process and potential members may apply at any time.  To be eligible for an Explorer position, an applicant must complete and submit the Explorer application. The selection process involves a background investigation and an interview with the head advisor, other post members and an officer of the Hendersonville Police Department.

Requirements

  • Must be a United States Citizen. 
  • Must have completed the 8th grade and be 14- 20 years old Explorers age out of the program on their 21st birthday. 
  • Maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher in school. 
  • Attend post meetings every other Thursday or properly notify advisors of absence. 
  • Adhere to Explorer Post rules and regulations.
  • Be willing to volunteer your time to attend various Explorer and civic functions.
  • Have no felony or criminal misdemeanor convictions. 
  • Pay an annual membership fee of $47.50 for insurance through the Boy Scouts of America. This fee is due at the first scheduled meeting in October. 
  • Pay a one time membership fee of $20.
