Snow and Ice Removal Policies
The City of Hendersonville has five (5) plow trucks and with spreaders for road salt. We must prioritize how we distribute our salt and available staff resources. Safety is our top priority, and we work to keep our roadways safe for the most users possible so roadways that serve higher numbers of people are addressed first.
Please see the list of treated locations, in order of priority, with the first listed being the highest priority:
- Bridges
- Steep Grades
- Multi-way Stop Intersections
- Hospital Access, Police Department, Fire Stations
- Arterials and Collectors
- All Major Intersections
- Residential Streets only when above priorities are clear and concentrating on steep grades first.
Main St. (31E), New Shackle Island Rd. and SR-386 (Vietnam Vets) are all state roads managed by TDOT.
*We will salt upon request if there is a genuine emergency situation.
**We also work to salt ahead of trash routes to facilitate reliable trash collection. Depending on the overall condition of the roadways into the city, the trash vendor, in coordination with the City, may still determine the roadway conditions to be unsafe for trash collection vehicles.
Other Helpful Reminders:
- Sidewalks: In accordance with Hendersonville Municipal Code Section 16-109, the occupants of property abutting on a sidewalk are required to remove all accumulated snow and ice from the abutting sidewalk.
- Trash Collection: If road conditions are unsafe for WastePro garbage trucks, your trash collection may be suspended by the Public Works Department until the trucks can safely move through the area. Any changes to the trash collection schedule can be found on our website or via social media (Facebook & Instagram). Specific inquiries should be made to the Department at 615-822-1016 or refuse@hvilletn.org.
- Equipment and Staff: The vast majority of winter storm events experienced in Hendersonville are manageable with existing resources thanks to our mild southern climate. Snow and ice events that last multiple days have not been annual occurrences historically, so the cost generally outweighs the benefit of the additional resources. We continue to monitor weather trends and will prioritize new equipment and staff resources as recommended by staff and determined by the Board of Mayor and Alderman.
